Big Boy Room Progress
We switched Levi into the bigger bedroom before Henry was born, knowing they’d need to eventually share a room. And once he was ready to transition from a crib, I knew I wanted to get him an antique four-poster bed. I had a very specific look in mind, and with the reality that the boys might share a room longer term, knew I’d want to find a matching set of beds for when we’re at that stage. Facebook Marketplace to the rescue! I’d been searching for a long time, even before he was ready for the switch because I knew I would be selective about what I wanted. I used terms like 4-poster bed, antique twin bed etc. I wanted at least a little detail on the finials, rather than round balls. After months of searching I found the perfect pair, for a great price and the man who sold them to me told me they’d been in his family a while and his own boys had used them!
The carpet in the larger bedroom is cream and with the walls in a similar tone, it was looking a little boring. I knew I could paint it, but decided to go bolder and wallpaper. I didn’t want something that looked like “kid wall paper” and ordered a number of samples of various stripes and patterns. In the end, I knew I’d use gingham and stripes throughout the room in bedding and things so I didn’t want that on the walls as well, and I chose a paper I had first looked at for Levi’s nursery. It’s a fruit and foliage print in a sage green and we love it! It’s a bit of a bold choice, but in the end I decided I didn’t want to spend the money to wallpaper and have it be subtle like painting it would have been. I also swapped out the light fixture for this slightly whimsical, semi flushmount.
Next up was finding bedding. I like an English traditional look. I wanted a mix of patterns and colors and I wanted it to feel whimsical and fun, it’s a kids room afterall. For sheets, I chose a larger green gingham, a small light blue gingham and a plaid with trucks (which I also got in the matching crib style for Henry because they were too cute). I went with a simple white duvet and put a yellow and white striped quilt folded at the bottom. I found mine second hand. I did a bedskirt in a cornflower blue stripe and added a long blue pillow from Brooks Brothers that I found at HomeGoods. The bed was done! Voilà!
Window coverings were tricky since the ceiling on this room is sloped in places and I couldn’t do curtains and there are two long skinny windows that almost demanded custom shades. I wanted a woven bamboo shade to add warmth and texture to the room. I ended up ordering from a company I’d gotten ads for online and I was a little worried they would end up being a disaster, but we actually love them! They came just as expected and the quality is great. I got the bamboo in shade “beige” and couldn’t be more pleased.
Since taking these photos I’ve finally found the perfect antique wood side table to replace the silver pedestal table, which is sweet, but not quite stable enough to permanent be in a bouncy, energetic boy’s room.
A lot of the other details in the room remain the same as his nursery (here and here). His mirror and dresser are antique store finds, the Pottery Barn glider was a Facebook Marketplace score and the yellow and white storage stool has continued to be great (currently storing games and puzzles). Our Pottery Barn bookshelf is exploding with books, but works well in the space. Henry will use the spindle crib that Levi had, although if I was designing now, I would maybe switch from white to a walnut finish.
