Fall always feels like an exciting fresh start. At the end of July or early August I take a look at our calendar and start plugging in tentative dates for all of our fall bucket list activities—baking pumpkin muffins, visiting pumpkin patches, apple picking, etc. It’s also around this time, in the highest heat of summer, that I start to think about fall wardrobes. It stays hot, or at least warm, here for a while, so we don’t really get those cool crisp autumn days until later into the season, but for one, all of the good fall stuff will be gone by then and two it’s just part of the planner in me to want to think through the outfits we’ll have for all our activities. The fashion of it seems to set the tone for the season and even if we can’t dress for crisp weather yet, I like to make a shift in color palettes and textures. Adding in browns, deep rosey hues and deeper greens, plaids, fall florals and checkered prints as well as light weight knits and corduroy get me in the mood for those crisp, clear days. A deep brown block print dress (with pockets!) fits the bill to a T—remaining light weight enough for the weather, while introducing the color palette for the season ahead. I paired it with a moss green cashmere cardigan (similar, less expensive) over the shoulders to add some depth and an extra layer for later in the evening if it gets chillier.
I do love fall hues (burnt oranges, mustard yellows, brick reds), but have learned that they don’t suit me and so I’ve gotten more creative with introducing colors that feel right for autumn without necessarily being a typical fall color. A plaid cranberry dress, a dusty pink ruffled collar cardigan and a green short-sleeved cashmere cardigan have made it on to my list. Along with brown pants and a gingerbread colored striped sweater with a sweet bow. For a lightweight coat I love this plaid barn jacket and a shorter trench.
