Weekly Whimsy | No. 5

Lately I’ve been reaching for my placemats each night for dinner. What started out as a thought that if I keep buying more and more I should make sure to use them frequently, turned into a realization that it changes the tone of the meal when you put some effort into making the table look nice. Even for a four year old. I’ve always tried to involve Levi in every day tasks around the house and now he also likes to set out the placemats. While I know they might end up stained and dirty, it’s a good reminder to “use the good stuff” and that you don’t have to wait for a special occasion to pull out the fancy dishes or cloth napkins—using them is sometimes what makes the occasion special. It sets a nice tone for everyone, reminding us to sit and eat and enjoy each other, maybe even rush a little less.

6 Things on My Mind

Polkadot dress—I bought this recently and love it! It’s so lightweight, has pockets and is great for these warmer fall days. I’ve been layering with a sweater in the morning and then taking it off once it warms up.

Halloween trick or treat bag—I bought one of these last year for Levi and it turned out so cute. I can’t decide if I should be ordering Henry’s as well even though he’s too young to use it, but just to be sure they’ll have matching ones in the future?

Washable knit pants—Thinking of cozy days ahead, I’m always striving for comfy at home, but still in a put together way. I’m not sure I’ve figured out how to achieve this, but these cream knit pants look oh-so comfy and a bit more put together than sweats or pjs.

Loafers—I love that loafers seem to be here to stay. They look classic and put together and lately I’ve tried on so many that are also ultra comfortable. I was at Nordstrom Rack and had a hard time deciding between a few pairs because there were so many. I ended up with these in suede chocolate brown.

Sandwich dressing—Have you heard of this? It’s essentially matching the top color you’re wearing to your shoes. So simple, but has such an impact and can make an otherwise uninteresting outfit look chic. I think this is especially so if the colors aren’t your typical neutrals. Sure black top + black shoes will create the sandwich effect, but it’s less interesting than say a chartreuse green cardigan paired with the same shade green suede flats (don’t you think I need these?).

Kristen Ellen Hockman Dillard's collaboration—Everything is so cute and feels very preppy, English style. Considering this for Henry and this sweater for Levi (baby cardigan version). The coats? Absolutely ridiculous how sweet they are.
